A Short Story - "Music in Main Park", Part 2

"I've always needed a trumpeter and some youngstors in my band.'' He said thoughtfully. "You just play your trumpet so I can see how good you are".

I scrambled to get my trumpet out. "Ta, ta, ta, ta, tata", I played.
"Hey you're pretty good. Meet me here tomorrow at about 1.30. See you there!".
"You too".

I ran home faster than a jet. I burst through the door and yelled, "I'm gonna be in Glenn Miller's band!!!".
"Good for you, hun", was all my mom said.
"Sarcasm...", I muttered under my breath, "...is the lowest form of wit".

I wolfed down dinner and went straight to bed. When I woke up I looked at the clock through sleepy eyes. "One o'clock!", I yelled. I had overslept! I put on my clothes as fast as a cheetah and ran out the door with my trumpet.

"I'm here!", I panted to Glenn Miller.
"Well, it's about time", he laughed, "here, study these notes and come back in week, when you have learned the music."
"That's it?" I asked.
"Yes, that's all".

So for that whole week, I practised and practised, and memorized every note on those pages. Then I went back to park and was surprised to see Glenn Miller's whole band there. "Everyone start playing your notes at the xact same time, and remember, keep to the beat!"

"OK, a one, a two, a one-two-three!"
"Da dum Da dum, Da dum Da dum, ta ta", went the band.
"I call this song, 'In the Mood'", said Glenn Miller across the intro. We played terrifically well. Soon a large crowd gathered around us. Then I heard a familiar tiny voice, "Momma, there's Mary!"
"Mac, just listen to the music... wait!. Mary?", asked mom with a look of surprise. "Yes, it's me", I replied after the music ended.
"You were great!", said mom.
"Thanks mom, I'm going to say something to Glenn Miller, alright?".
"Hi Glenn".
"Hi Mary", replied Glenn.
"That was a nice show today".
"Thanks"
"Uh-oh, I've got to go. My mom is calling me".

When I got back I flopped on the bed. As I drifted off to sleep, I though about the time I had spent with Glenn Miller. I never will forget the time I played "In the Mood" with Glenn Miller and his band.

The End.
